Wallpaper: On a computer that is provided with a desktop kind of user interface, wallpaper is the background pattern or picture against which desktop menus, icons, and other elements are displayed and moved around. A wallpaper image can be in a JPEG or a GIF file format. Wallpaper is commonly used in Microsoft Windows, Macintosh Mac OS, Linux, and in other operating systems as well. Each operating system provides several pre-installed wallpaper images for the user to choose from. A user can also choose to download and install third-party wallpapers and use one of these instead. Typically, a wallpaper image may be centered, stretched, or tiled. When an image is centered, it is placed in the middle of the desktop and is surrounded by a solid color. When an image is stretched, it is stretched to cover the entire desktop. Only certain images can be stretched or they look distorted. An image that is tiled is placed on the desktop much like tiles are placed in a shower or a tiled floor. Tiling is commonly used for patterns instead of photos because a pattern is one square image that repeats itself across and down the screen, effectively forming a single image.
Screensaver: A screen saver is an animated image that is activated on a personal computer display when no user activity has been sensed for a certain time. The original purpose of a screen saver was to prevent burn-in (the burning of an image into the phosphor inside the cathode ray tube after hours of the same image being rescanned). In fact, today's CRT display technology makes burn-in unlikely except under extreme conditions. (On larger displays used for room presentations, burn-in is still a possibility.) Windows comes with built-in screen savers that you can select. If you purchase your computer with the operating system already installed, a screen saver may have been selected for you. You can set the screen saver using the task bar by selecting Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, then Display, and then Screen Saver, which lets you select one of the provided screen savers or one you have added to the Windows screen saver directory. The Mac also lets you set up a screen saver.
Myspace layout: There are several names for a myspace layout: background, skin, wallpaper etc. Basically a layout gives your myspace page personality. The layout will make the image in the background of your myspace page custom to what you choose. It can include a contact table, which customizes the image on your message, add and email etc. section of your myspace page. A layout sometimes changes your extended network box as well to match your background image.
Emotion: In Internet e-mail messages and Web discussions, a smiley is a sequence of typed characters that graphically produces the sideways image of someone smiling, like this: :-) The first use of a smiley is currently attributed to Scott E. Fahlman, who in a posting on Sept. 19, 1982, wrote "I propose the following character sequence for joke markers :-)." Fahlman noted that smile had to be read sideways. The original smiley led to the creation of many other facial expressions built with keyboard characters as well as the invention of the term emoticon to describe them all.

Some forums allow the user to upload an avatar image that may have been designed by the user or acquired from elsewhere. Other forums allow the user to select an avatar from a preset list or use an auto-discovery algorithm to extract one from the user's homepage. Some avatars are animated, consisting of a sequence of multiple images played repeatedly.
